the cabin game 1–4 Players, One Clock
Steam lobby setup, co-op roles, voice chat, and what Patch 5 changed for multiplayer stability.
the cabin game supports 1–4 players and online co-op on Steam Windows. The current Steam build exposes Public, Private and LAN lobby modes, an optional password field, a max-player selector, and an invite code field. There is no local split-screen — everyone connects over the network.
The game entered Early Access on 27 August 2026. The Optimization Update added a version mismatch check so mixed builds cannot play together. Patch 5 (Sep. 5, 2026) fixed the “cannot start turn” freeze, chair/sit bugs, and mid-run disconnects returning to a void instead of the lobby. This page is the connection and co-op playbook. For the table job split, see Co-op. For connection problems, see Hosting.
Create a private lobby
- Choose Host from the main menu.
- Give the lobby a name.
- Select Private if you do not want it openly joinable.
- Add a password if the group wants one; the current UI labels it optional.
- Set the maximum player count. The current UI allows up to 4.
- Copy the invite code and share it with the people you actually intend to play with.
- Create the lobby and wait for friends to join.
Current footage shows groups using a code/password flow after the lobby is created. Use a fresh code each session — do not recycle a code from a crashed Neighbour lobby.
If a friend gets “failed to join”
The Aug. 30 patch fixed join-code wording that said failed to join when it did not. A false error is not the same as a real connection drop.
One supplied current-build session shows a player receiving a join failure and then getting in after returning to the game or using Steam’s friend-join behavior. Treat that as a player-observed fallback, not an official fix.
Use this order before changing network settings:
- Make sure everyone has the same Steam build. Mixed versions used to create bugs; Aug. 30 added version-mismatch blocking so mixed-build lobbies should not form in the first place.
- Re-copy the invite code and password.
- Try the in-game join flow again.
- If Steam Friends exposes a Join option, try that route.
- If several players fail after the same patch, check the current Steam discussion hub before assuming the issue is local to one router or firewall.
If someone cannot start their turn
The Aug. 29 developer note is specific: in multiplayer, if a player cannot start their turn, have everyone verify game files. That was a version-mismatch bug. Aug. 30 then added mismatch blocking so mixed-build lobbies should not form in the first place.
Patch 5 (Sep. 5, 2026) lists can’t start turn as fixed. If the on-screen option still hides, press T. If it still fails on the same current build, capture it and report it. Do not treat it as a clue or Event failure.
Voice and sound in multiplayer
Current game tips warn that player sounds — including walking, talking and some goodie-bag items — can reveal location during relevant encounters. Voice chat is therefore not only social UI; it can become part of the Event risk.
During normal clue discussion, coordinate freely. During an Event that reacts to sound, shorten callouts and let the active player hear the game’s own instruction.
The in-game voice icon is covered on Controls. English is the only interface and full audio track; localization is planned.
Mid-game disconnects (Patch 5 fix)
Patch 4 listed clients disconnecting when returning to the lobby as fixed. Patch 5 adds that a mid-run disconnect should return you to the lobby, not the void.
Mid-game disconnects are still open in terms of connectivity/lag. The developer says candy compensation is coming for those drops. See Known Bugs for current status.
If a player disconnects mid-run and returns to the lobby, they can rejoin if the lobby is still active. Do not assume the run is over just because someone dropped — Patch 5 means they end up back in the right place.
Is solo supported?
Yes. The official Steam feature list includes Single-player and Online Co-op. Solo still uses the same table / clue / Event structure, but every table decision and first-person task lands on one person.
Solo balance is not identical to co-op; Early Access tuning can change. Read Solo before you copy a four-player floor plan onto one body. Time-skip cards inflate solo length substantially — solo players report two-hour runs padded with skips.
PS5, Xbox and crossplay
As of September 2026, the official store still verifies Windows only. Google autocomplete already shows PS5, Xbox, console and crossplay interest, but search demand is not release evidence.
- PS5: no verified release listing yet.
- Xbox: no verified release listing yet.
- PC ↔ console crossplay: no verified path because there is no confirmed console build to pair with the Steam version.
Those short questions stay merged here instead of becoming three nearly empty SEO pages.
The final hour in co-op
When the pawns are close and the clock is loud, decide the social ending before someone panics into the wrong doorway. The design offers three postures:
- Escape together: path as a group to the identified room. Correct room still required.
- Die together: misidentified, or the monster pawn won, and you stop pretending a split save is coming.
- Every player for themselves: valid, and it will strand the person who stayed to call the clock. Say it out loud if that is the plan so the caller can stand up.
When the ghost catches you in 3D space, entering the correct room is the escape. Call the room name on voice. Repeat it. Do not say “this way” while running toward a dead-end Cellar you placed at 2 o’clock.
How this guide was verified
Player count/platform claims come from the official Steam listing. Lobby mode, password, max-player and invite-code fields come from the current-build host screenshot. Join-failure behavior comes from current gameplay footage and remains labeled as a player observation. Version-mismatch / verify-files steps come from the official Aug. 29 and Aug. 30 developer notes. Patch 4 lobby-disconnect status comes from the Sep. 3 official note. Patch 5 lists can’t-start-turn as fixed (press T if the button hides) and mid-run disconnects should return to the lobby instead of the void.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about cards, clues, monsters, and escaping the cabin.
How many players does the cabin game support?
Why can't someone start their turn?
Version mismatch was the main cause. Verify game files and ensure everyone is on the same build. Patch 5 officially fixes this — if the button still hides, press T and report.
The join code says it failed. Did it?
Not always. Aug. 30 fixed a false fail. Check whether you are already in the session before spamming a new code. If you are in, sit down. If you are not, verify files and try one more clean join.
Can someone rejoin if they disconnect mid-run?
Patch 5 means mid-run disconnects return to the lobby instead of a void. If the lobby is still active, they may be able to rejoin. Candy compensation for drops is still being worked on.
Does voice chat matter?
Yes. Game sounds can reveal location during Events, and the table caller needs to name pawn movement and the escape room while searchers are in hallways. Use in-game voice or a third-party app.
Is console crossplay coming?
As of September 2026, no verified PS5 or Xbox listing exists. Search demand is not release evidence. PC-only for now.
